Pilgrims currently meets on the 1st Thursday morning of the month – starting at 10.30 for coffee, followed by a Bible Study, discussion or talk.
Since last September our programme has been varied. In September Karen Frost spoke to us about Human Trafficking. Maybe something we don’t expect to hear about too much in West Berkshire – but it is here. Statistics can show that – but Karen got down to brass tacks and told us of the signs, concerns and difficulties confronting both the ‘victims’ and the authorities in dealing with it.
In October, Bob Farrimond spoke to us about Chaplaincy in Newbury and how most retail staff are now welcoming them into the shops. Volunteers wear their special jackets, always start their round with prayer, have been specially trained and are out on Wednesday afternoons and on Thursday mornings. From October we met weekly and continued our studies of the Lord’s Prayer.
In November, and although it was early our first discussion was about what Christmas means to us – and more specifically Advent. We all learnt a lot that morning.
From the rest of November and December we followed the Advent book Pilgrims to the Manger written by Naomi Starkey. This involved daily reading at home followed by discussion and questions on Thursday mornings. As it is continues into Epiphany we completed the book in mid January and in our last session did something quite different.
We unpacked a Christmas Carol – very rarely sung in Churches nowadays. It was Good King Wenceslas.
We did not meet in Lent and follow another book as usual. We had been asked to support the ecumenical Lent course being held at the Catholic Church.
Since the beginning of March (back to monthly) we have been following the book ‘Called by Name’ – being a member of the Methodist Church. It was expected to be completed in 3 sessions – the next session will be 5 – it is providing so many areas of discussion.
Please read notices for August. In September (5th) we are going to the Floral Fanfare at Westminster Central Hall – celebrating their centenary. It is to too late to put your name down to come.
We hope that Pilgrims provides a weekday meeting for fellowship, Christian discussion and refreshments. It is a time to study and reflect what it means to be on the pilgrimage of life. We are always pleased to welcome new members.
